Over at Power Line–the well known hard right conservative power blog–they have a positive post (The Mitt Begins To Fit) about Mitt Romney. They also reference some good links (all of which you should follow) from today in other online venues/blogs commenting on Mitt Romney. There is, of course, the obligatory Mormon reference–but also the counter with the new Evangelicals for Mitt Blog, which also happens to have its own post on today’s Mitt happenings here.
Bottom line is that Mitt is looking more and more like a viable conservative alternative to candidates such as McCain and Giuliani, given George Allen’s current troubles. Power Line also points out Romney’s Iowa success formula. Things are looking good for Mitt.

Guy,
Over on the Washington Post, Chris Cillizza has a blog called The Fix and he shows a recent poll taken in Iowa of all the potential Republican candidates.
Romney is fourth on the list. There is still plenty of time to energize the vote, but at this point in Iowa, he is still not well known.
As for the question of his religion….I don’t know. I think if people were not observed (i.e. they didn’t feel like they were watched), they would probably choose a non-Mormon candidate over the Mormon candidate, all other things being equal. I still believe that, and I want to be surprised.

Dan, Thanks for this update and link. I don’t consider Bill Frist as a serious contender. I would agree that Romney’s most serious competition in Iowa will likely be McCain and Giuliani–but neither of them are likely to win conservatives’ hearts in the long run.
I’m still liking Romney’s chances. Since he’s not the perceived front runner he doesn’t have to walk away with a win in Iowa. I’m not so sure about the religion issue any longer. The media likes to talk about it; but, I don’t think average Joe and Jane American are really going to care that much.
I am a bit concerned about Romney’s positions on Iraq. There isn’t a lot published yet; however, from what I’ve read, he’s more supportive of the war than I am. We’ll see–it’s still a long, long way to the primaries–but from what I’ve seen so far, I like it.

I’m a bit concerned about Romney’s recent posturing on Iran:

The governor is displaying in this case either scandalous naivete or startling cynicism.
Of course, neither attribute has been an impediment in the quest for the White House in the recent past.
