Time again for the Semi Annual Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints–Mormon General Conference.  LDS Media Talk has a great post with several links on how best to enjoy this year’s October Conference.    There are also several Blogernacle Links where you can follow conference:  Of course there is the By Common Consent Threads–i.e., The One and Only True General Conference Thread (psst–don’t tell them, but they think they’re the only ‘nacle link out there for General Conference).  Chris H over at FPR has an open thread, mingling the philosophies of men, with conference (and being the social justice guru I know him to be, it will also include the philosophies of women as well). M* also has an open thread.  If you Tweet, the follow #ldsconf for pithy 140 character summaries.  Should be a great 5 sessions.  Come listen to Prophets, Seers and Revelators–messengers of the Lord Jesus Christ, and mold your life accordingly . . .

Lots of noise today from the political right.  Lots of discussion about “restoring honor to America” and “getting back to God.”  On this I can agree with those who so proclaim from the nation’s capitol, today.  The path, however, lies through keeping the commandments, and not adhering to the philosophies of men.  America has strayed from Her primary purpose as the Cradle of the Restoration, but not through any political sins–so called.  Rather, Her people like many before have strayed from the Commandments of God, and no longer worship Jesus Christ.  This is where America’s fundamental problem lies.

The solution is rather simple–but most, likely will not see it because of the simplicity.  If we truly want to restore honor to America and get back to God, we should begin to keep His Commandments and we will prosper in the land. The best way to do that is to follow the Brethren, not Beck. We will restore much more honor to America and get much closer to God by reading more of the Scriptures, praying more to God, serving others, than by all the breast beating and pontificating from Washington D.C.  Choose you this day . . .

The Church Newsroom has announced that the First Presidency is urging U.S. Members to participate in the United States Census.  A letter will be read from the pulpit in all U.S. congregations:

In a letter to be read in all U.S. congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the First Presidency urged Mormons to participate in the 2010 United States Census:
“The United States Constitution mandates that a census be counted every ten years. This census is used to determine the makeup of state legislatures, local school boards, and other government bodies and to determine how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Church also uses census data for planning purposes.
“The Census Bureau will soon deliver census questionnaires to every household in America. We urge all members to respond to them in an accurate and timely manner. It is an important obligation for all citizens to be counted in the census.”
That such a letter needs to be read at all says some disturbing things about some of the far right politics of some Church members.

[Admin Note:  The following post is currently posted over at Patheos.com.   For those who have not visited Patheos, you can read about the site in this review at Times and Seasons, and of course visit Patheos yourself and see their content.   They are also running an opposing view point by Nate Oman.   If you are so inclined to comment, please do so over at Patheos, as I have closed comments for this post over here.] (more…)

christresurrectedThe First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued their Easter message today.  In it, The Brethren testifed of the physical reality of the Resurection of Jesus Christ–not a metaphorical message, a symbolic story–but the physical reality of His death, burial, and triumphant Resurrection from the dead:

From the S.F. Chronical Political Blog:

“We believe ALL families matter and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop. 8,” she said.

Steve Young speaks for his family.  Thomas S. Monson speaks for Jesus Christ.

My last two posts, here and here, now quite some time ago dealt with the First Presidency letter read in Sacrament meetings all over California last June.  I am pleased to see that since that time from what I have heard and observed, California saints all over the state have heeded and continue to heed that call, with their time, talents, and means.  Tens of thousands have walked and continue to walk precincts and make telephone calls. (more…)

Well, OK Sunday came and went and we in California got the call.  I suspect Bishops all over California read the First Presidency letter in Sacrament Meeting (though my Bishop told me he learned about the letter from my blog, and had to confirm with the Stake President before reading it–lost letter out there somewhere); however, my son who is visiting cousins up in Anacortes, WA sent me a text that the Bishop in the Anacortes ward also read the letter over the pulpit at Sacrament Meeting. (more…)

The question is whether we will be there to answer it.  This Sunday, LDS bishops all over California will read, from the pulpit, a letter signed by the First Presidency, (First Presidency Letter) directed to each and every member of the Church in California. (more…)
