Memo to Peggy Fletcher Stack, of the Salt Lake Tribune:

Not all LDS blogs or bloggers in the bloggernacle joined in the rush to bash President Julie Beck. Ordinarily I enjoy reading Peggy Fletcher Stack’s articles in the Tribune. Most of the time, I think she does a good job of producing well written, balanced articles about religion generally, and specifically about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon Church. But, Stack’s article in today’s Tribune departs from her normally calm and measured reporting. (more…)

(Photo of a newly sealed Ghana family–proudly featuring a beaming father, two beautiful children, and from the looks of the photograph, a Mother who “knows.”)

I have received, what may very well be my last email from the Moncurs, currently serving as missionaries in West Africa, Ghana. Their latest email and photos follow below the jump. I will miss hearing about their daily labors amongst the Ghana Saints. I will miss hearing about the lives of the Ghana Saints and seeing them in the photos. One of my greatest sense of loss will the be perspective they bring to my all too often careful and troubled life, here in the talkative and well fed West.

And, while it will be good to see the Moncurs again and hear of their experiences with the Ghana Saints, I will miss the update on those saints. I’m sure it will be very difficult for the Moncurs to sing that last farewell hymn in Sacrament meeting in a few short Sundays–God Be With You, Till We Meet Again. (more…)

The fifth and final session of Conference is here. It’s been a spiritually rich and fulfilling weekend listening to inspired prophetic counsel from the Prophets, Seers, and Revelators of the Church. (more…)

Jesus Christ–

It’s a beautiful cool, but sunny Sunday morning here in the heart of California’s Central Coast–or as we like to say–just another dull day in Paradise. The Fourth Session of Conference is about to begin, and I’m enjoying the Choir’s singing on Music and the Spoken Word. It’s a very calm and peaceful way to begin such a Sunday morning. For ‘nacle discussions of this morning’s session, see Times and Seasons, and Mormon Mentality. (more…)

Saturday’s afternoon session of Conference is about to begin. You can listen and/or watch live on the Church’s website at LDS.org. Fortunately you won’t have to rely on my sparse notes, as the full transcripts of Conference are posted usually by the following Thursday also on the Church’s website. You can choose from a variety of different languages as well. The Deseret News also has a General Conference section on their website. For the iPod crowd, Sixteen Small Stones has some excellent links already posted to podcasts of the Saturday Morning broadcast. They were put up quite quickly. For the Bloggernacle links on Conference see my morning post. (more…)

Saturday Morning, the first weekend in October, and it’s again time for the Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Around the Bloggernacle, you can find these Conference threads: Times and Seasons has an open thread; By Common Consent didn’t have a thread up as Conference opened, but if you’re in to a rowdy Saturday morning, Ronan as an open Rugby thread over there; Feminist Mormon Housewives has a thread on Conference traditions; Mormon Mentality, has a bingo version of Conference, and an open conference thread as well; Zelophehad’s Daughters has a Conference poll; Our Thoughts also has an open thread. The Oregonian yesterday (Hat tip to Just at The Wasp!) ran an article of the latest round of sexual abuse litigation to hit the Oregon courts, by the same attorney and law firm (surprise surprise, and which isn’t at all bashful about grandstanding publicly about it) which brought the last round (at least in Oregon). Update: 7:30 p.m. The Church’s official response to the Oregon News reports of today: IRRESPONSIBLE (and frankly I agree). (more…)
