(Updated 8/10/06) [Note: This is an updated post from the old M&A Blogger site, containing the most recent links and commentary on this issue.] A “recent” article in the Los Angeles Times has returned the issue of The Book of Mormon and DNA to the news media. My purpose in this post is simply to catalogue to the extent possible, in one location as much of the DNA and Book of Mormon discussion that has occurred in the Bloggernacle and other sources. If anyone knows of posts, threads or discussions I have missed, please let me know so that I may include them here. I will disclose up front that I believe the Book of Mormon to be what it claims to be, i.e., a Second Witness for Jesus Christ. Therefore, I will retain editorial control over the links I post. My purpose is to provide links that will impart information for faithful Latter-day Saints to become informed on these issues, and to allow them to study it out in their own minds. Many of the Blog links below are generally faithful discussions of this issue; however, some of the comments are at times critical of the Church’s position.

Heh. My faith was so shaken by this issue that I’d completely forgotten about it. Had to revisit the link you mentioned to realize that a) my brother had written most of it, and b) the whole DNA thing is really, from an eternal perspective, rather silly. If we need DNA to prove the value of the book, I’m afraid DNA won’t do the trick. The key ingredient is already missing.

Woody, Yep . . . you got it right! Thanks for stopping by.

No doubt the targetting of the Book of Mormon via DNA research has been biased, and premature. Articles show that there is much more to the question of the DNA of the Founders of the Nephite/Lamanite, Mulekite, and Jaredite civilizations! What DNA did they carry? and what DNA do modern Jews carry? Valid questions with perhaps surprising answers.

Richard, Yes . . very biased and premature. I’ll be looking forward to the answers to the questions you suggest, and others. Thanks for stopping by.

The Adam & Eve story is taken from a Chaldean myth. It never really happened. Christians say we need a savior, since those people in the garden were disobedient. Since the Adam & Eve story never really happened, we DO NOT need a savior. We are our own savior. By trying to live a righteous life, we progress thru many lifetimes to a perfected state.

Not only do modern Jews and American Indians share DNA such as the Y chromosome lineage group Q-P36 but current views on the first colonization of America corresponds closely to the Book of Ether.

Researchers of the pre-Indian civilization of the “Mound Builders” in the midwest USA may also recognize things from the Book of Ether.
But yeah, there are such big holes in the DNA-based accusations against the BoM that you could drive a Mack truck through them.
